Introduction
When Luna was about six months old, I genuinely started to panic. My vet kept saying she was “perfectly healthy,” but compared to my friend’s six month old tabby, Luna looked like a whole different species with enormous paws, a belly that was somehow always in the way, and a tail I swear was longer than my forearm. I had no idea what a “normal” Maine Coon growth chart even looked like.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably in the same boat. You’ve got this majestic, fluffy, slightly ridiculous creature at home and you’re wondering: Is my Maine Coon growing the way they should be? The good news is, Maine Coons grow on their own timeline and it’s a long one. These cats don’t reach full size until they’re three to five years old, which is wild compared to most domestic cats. Understanding the Maine Coon growth chart month by month is one of the best things you can do to track your cat’s health and set realistic expectations.
Let’s walk through every stage together.
What Makes Maine Coon Growth Different From Other Cats
Here’s something that blew my mind when I first got Luna: most domestic cats are fully grown by around 12 months. Maine Coons? They’re still actively growing at 18 months. Some don’t hit their full adult weight until they’re 4 or 5 years old.
This slow, extended growth is completely normal for the breed. Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds in the world, with males regularly hitting 15 – 25 lbs and females ranging from 8 – 16 lbs. That kind of size takes time to build.
Why Their Growth Curve Looks Different
A typical domestic cat grows fast and levels off. A Maine Coon grows more like a slow burn steady gains through kittenhood, a big push through their first two years, then a gradual fill out phase that can last well into year four or five. During that fill out phase, they’re not necessarily getting taller or longer; they’re adding muscle mass and broadening out in the chest and shoulders.
Luna hit what I thought was her “full size” at around 18 months. Then she kept going. At three years old, she finally looked like the regal beast I’d been promised on every Maine Coon Pinterest board.
Maine Coon Growth Chart: Month by Month Weight Milestones
Here’s the breakdown you came here for. Keep in mind these are averages individual cats vary based on genetics, diet, and whether they’re male or female. Males consistently run heavier than females.
Birth to 1 Month
- Average weight at birth: 0.2 – 0.4 lbs (100 – 170g)
- Average weight at 1 month: 1 – 1.5 lbs
Newborn Maine Coon kittens look like any other newborn tiny, blind, and completely dependent on mom. What you might notice even at this stage is the slightly larger than average build compared to other breeds. By one month, healthy kittens should have roughly doubled or tripled their birth weight.
2 Months
- Average weight: 2 – 3 lbs
At two months, Maine Coon kittens are starting to look like actual cats. They’re playful, clumsy, and if you’re anything like me already dangerously cute. This is typically when kittens are weaned and when most reputable breeders begin the process of finding homes (though 12 – 16 weeks is the ideal age for adoption).
3 Months
- Average weight: 3 – 4.5 lbs
By three months, you’ll start to see the Maine Coon features coming in tufted ears, big paws, that fluffy tail. They’re eating solid food and growing fast. This is a great time to establish a vet relationship and start tracking weight monthly.
4 Months
- Average weight: 4 – 6 lbs
Four months in, and they’re getting noticeably bigger every week. I remember picking Luna up at four months after being away for a week and being genuinely shocked. She felt like a completely different cat.
5 Months
- Average weight: 5 – 7.5 lbs
At five months, some Maine Coon kittens are already bigger than a fully grown average domestic cat. Don’t be alarmed. This is the breed doing what the breed does. They should be energetic, curious, and eating well.
6 Months
- Average weight: 6 – 9 lbs
The six month mark is where a lot of first – time Maine Coon owners start to worry or brag, depending on your energy. Males especially can look surprisingly large. This is also around the time most vets recommend spaying or neutering, which can slightly affect growth rate (neutered cats may fill out a bit more in the body).
7 – 9 Months
- Average weight: 7 – 11 lbs
Growth is still steady but starting to slow slightly. Your Maine Coon is entering what I’d call the “awkward teenager” phase they’re big enough to be clumsy but still kitten brained. Luna destroyed an entire bookshelf during this phase. I’m not ready to talk about it.
10 – 12 Months
- Average weight: 8 – 13 lbs (males may be higher)
At one year, a Maine Coon is technically an adolescent, not a full adult. Many people are surprised to learn their one year old Maine Coon still has years of growth ahead. They look mostly grown but aren’t done yet.
1 – 2 Years
- Average weight: 10 – 18 lbs (males), 8 – 14 lbs (females)
This two – year window is a big one. Your Maine Coon is filling out in earnest more muscle, broader chest, thicker neck. Males especially can put on significant weight during this period. Keep an eye on diet here; it’s easy to overfeed a cat who looks like they “should” be bigger.
2 – 4 Years
- Average weight: 13 – 25 lbs (males), 8 – 16 lbs (females)
This is the final growth phase. By year four, most Maine Coons are at or near their adult size. Some males will keep slowly adding muscle until five years old. Luna hit her “finished” look right around three and a half full mane, huge tail, and an attitude that suggested she knew exactly how impressive she was.
How to Tell If Your Maine Coon Is Overweight vs. Still Growing
This is one of the trickiest parts of owning a large breed of cat. Maine Coons are supposed to be big, so it can be hard to tell if your cat is carrying extra weight or just… growing.
The Rib Test
Run your hands along your cat’s sides. You should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard, but you shouldn’t be able to see them. If you can’t feel ribs at all, that’s a flag for extra weight.
The Waist Check
Looking down at your cat from above, there should be a slight waist visible behind the ribcage. If the sides are straight or bulging out, extra weight is likely.
The Belly
A small “primordial pouch” that has a little fold of skin on the belly is normal and common in Maine Coons. A large, rounded belly that swings when they walk is a different story.
When in doubt, ask your vet. They can calculate your cat’s Body Condition Score (BCS) and give you a target weight range specific to your cat’s frame.
What Affects a Maine Coon’s Growth Rate
Not every Maine Coon follows the chart exactly, and that’s okay. Several factors influence how fast and how large your cat grows.
Genetics
This is the biggest one. If you got your cat from a breeder, ask about the parents’ size. A kitten from two large parents is likely to be large. Rescue Maine Coon mixes are harder to predict, but the Maine Coon genes typically still produce a bigger than average cat.
Sex
Males are consistently and significantly larger than females. A male Maine Coon at 18 lbs is totally normal. A female at 18 lbs would be on the high end and worth checking with a vet.
Spay/Neuter Timing
Early spay/neuter (before 6 months) can cause cats to grow slightly taller and longer, because sex hormones normally signal the body to stop growing. This doesn’t mean early spay/neuter is harmful, just something to be aware of.
Diet and Nutrition
High quality, protein rich food supports healthy muscle development. I switched Luna to a raw adjacent high protein kibble at around eight months, and I swear her coat and muscle tone improved noticeably within six weeks.

Health Conditions
Parasites, chronic illness, or nutritional deficiencies can slow growth. If your kitten is consistently falling below the lower end of the weight ranges above, a vet visit is in order.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for a Maine Coon to be fully grown?
Maine Coons typically reach their full size between 3 and 5 years of age much longer than most domestic cat breeds. Males often continue adding muscle and bulk until around 4 – 5 years, while females may reach their full size closer to 3 – 4 years. Don’t be surprised if your Maine Coon looks noticeably bigger each birthday for several years running.
How big will my Maine Coon get?
Males typically weigh between 15 – 25 lbs at full maturity, while females usually land between 8 – 16 lbs. The best predictor is the size of the parents. Maine Coons that are part of a mixed rescue may lean smaller depending on the other breeds involved.
Is my Maine Coon overweight or just big?
Maine Coons are naturally large, but they can still be overweight. The rib test is your best at home check: you should be able to feel (but not see) the ribs easily. A slight waist visible from above is a good sign. When in doubt, ask your vet for a Body Condition Score assessment.
At what age should I switch my Maine Coon from kitten to adult food?
Because Maine Coons grow for so long, many vets recommend keeping them on kitten food (or a large breed kitten formula) until 12 – 18 months. After that, transition to a high-quality adult food appropriate for large breeds. Always make the switch gradually over 7 – 10 days to avoid digestive upset.
Do male and female Maine Coons grow at the same rate?
They grow at a similar rate early on, but males pull significantly ahead in weight and size by 6 – 12 months and continue to do so through adulthood. A male Maine Coon can easily outweigh a female by 5 – 10 lbs at full maturity. Both sexes grow slowly and don’t reach full size until well after their first birthday.
What if my Maine Coon is smaller than the growth chart says?
Individual variation is totally normal. If your cat is consistently tracking in the lower part of the range but is active, has a healthy appetite, and is getting a clean bill of health from the vet, there’s likely nothing to worry about. If your cat is significantly below the low end of the range, or seems lethargic or uninterested in food, check in with your vet to rule out underlying health issues.
One More Thing Before You Go From One Maine Coon Mom to Another
The Maine Coon growth chart is less of a strict rulebook and more of a roadmap a way to know roughly where your cat should be and when to raise a flag with your vet. The most important thing to remember is that these cats are slow growers, and that’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Watching Luna go from a fluffy little potato at eight weeks to the absolute unit she is today has been one of the most entertaining, rewarding experiences of my cat-parent life.
Track your cat’s weight monthly, keep up with regular vet visits, feed them quality protein rich food, and trust the process. That tiny kitten will get bigger than you’re probably imagining right now and it’ll happen on their schedule.
If you found this guide helpful, I’d love to hear how big your Maine Coon is in the comments below! And if you’re still in the kitten stage, buckle up it’s going to be a beautiful, fur-covered ride.
